Christmas Nut Horns
Granny Ruth
Ingredients
Dough:
□ 1 package of dry yeast
□ ½ pint sour cream
□ 3 egg yolks
□ 1 tsp vanilla
□ 4 sticks butter (cold)
□ 5 cups flour
Filling:
□ 1 lb ground walnuts
□ 1 stick butter
□ ¼ cup sugar
□ ⅓ cup honey
□ 1 tsp vanilla
Directions
Yield 72, 3 inch nut horns
Dough chills overnight
Bake at 375°
Cook time: 12-15 minutes
Dough Directions
Step 1
In a small bowl, mix together dry yeast, sour cream, egg yolks, and vanilla.
Step 2
In a separate bowl, mix together butter and flower, using a pastry cutter, until consistency is similar to pie crust.
Step 3
Combine both of the mixtures together and knead until smooth with additional flour on kneading surface.
Step 4
Form dough into 7 balls, wrap in wax paper and chill overnight
Filling Directions
Step 1
Combine all filling ingredients in a pan and heat on stove top until butter is melted.
Step 2
Let cool before filling dough.
Assembly Directions
Step 1
Roll out dough into circle
and cut diagonally into 12 pie shape pieces.
Step 2
Fill dough slice (beginning at the large end) with 1 tsp filling. Roll large to small to create a horn shape. Roll entire horn in granulated sugar.
Step 3
Place nut horns on oven safe pan covered in parchment paper and bake at 375°F for 12-15 minutes.
This recipe, along with many others has been passed down for many generations in Granny Ruth’s family. Traditionally served at Christmas or Easter, this recipe is delectably sweet and can be enjoyed any time of the year!
