The University of Illinois Bee Research Facility is seeking a beekeeping assistant to help the current Bee Lab Manager with general beekeeping operations, apiary upkeep, and facility maintenance. This position will also help support honey bee-related research projects. Duties and qualifications are listed below. This is for the summer of 2025, with possible extensions into late Spring or early Fall, if applicant has availability. This is a paid position and an excellent opportunity to learn and assist in an academic beekeeping operation. The Bee Research Facility is co-directed by Professors Gene Robinson and Adam Dolezal. Duties
- Assist with beekeeping operations
- Seasonal management
- Colony moves
- Colony feeding
- Colony health checks and treatments
- Assist with apiary upkeep
- Mowing
- Basic landscaping
- Assist with general Building Facilities maintenance
- Cleaning
- General organization
- Assist with bee-related research projects
- Help collect emerging brood for research projects
- Help collect bee resources (ex. propolis, bee developmental stages, royal jelly, small hive beetles) for research projects
- Maintain the health of experimental colonies
Qualifications
- Valid Driver’s license and access to independent transportation
- Experience/Knowledge in beekeeping, ideally:
- Ability to do colony checks independently
- Ability to determine brood patterns
- Ability to identify and use general beekeeping equipment
- Ability to identify honey bee pests and diseases
